I believe this idea is oversimplified. While age undoubtedly plays a role in chess development, I suspect that one of the largest differentiators between children and adults is not simply neuroplasticity, but rather the environment in which learning takes place.
The Language Learning Analogy
People often compare learning chess to learning a language. The argument is usually that, because adults have difficulty becoming indistinguishable from native speakers when learning a new language, adults must also be fundamentally limited in their ability to improve at chess.
However, this comparison is often misunderstood.
What is true is that adult language learners generally have more difficulty achieving native-like pronunciation. Their accent is often different from that of native speakers, while children can sometimes become indistinguishable in their pronunciation. Children also appear to have advantages in certain aspects of automaticity: the intuitive grasp of a language, its grammar, and the ability to process it effortlessly.
However, this is only part of the story.
A person does not need native pronunciation to be considered fluent in a language. Adults learning a new language can and do become fluent. In fact, adults often learn faster than children during the initial stages because they possess advantages such as abstract reasoning, previous knowledge, and better learning strategies. At a certain point, however, children often overtake adults, particularly in achieving native-like automaticity.
The question, then, is why this happens.
I am not a cognitive scientist or linguist, so I cannot claim to fully understand the underlying research. However, one of the biggest differentiators seems to be immersion.
The Role of Immersion
As with language learning, immersion appears to provide children with a massive advantage in chess.
Immersion means more than simply studying. It means being surrounded by the activity: thinking about it, discussing it, experiencing it, and making it part of daily life.
For chess, immersion can include:
- constantly playing games,
- participating in tournaments,
- analyzing positions with stronger players,
- discussing chess with friends,
- having access to a chess community,
- experiencing thousands of practical situations over many years.
A child who becomes interested in chess often has a significant portion of their life oriented around the game. Chess is not simply a hobby they practice for a few hours a week; it becomes part of their environment, identity, and social world.
This creates a huge amount of exposure that is difficult for adults to replicate.
Why Adults Often Struggle to Recreate This Environment
Adults face a very different reality.
Responsibilities consume a significant portion of their time. Work, relationships, finances, and other obligations limit the amount of energy and attention they can dedicate to chess.
Their learning is often compartmentalized.
An adult might study chess for two hours after work, whereas a young chess player may spend their entire day surrounded by the game: playing, discussing, studying, and competing.
Both may receive the same amount of formal coaching, but the child often receives much more informal learning through exposure and experience.
This does not mean neuroplasticity is irrelevant. It may provide some advantage to younger learners. However, adults retain enough neuroplasticity to learn complex skills. Chess is not conceptually as demanding as fields such as advanced physics or mathematics, where the creation and understanding of new abstract concepts can be extraordinarily difficult.
The strongest argument for age-related limitations in chess is not that adults cannot understand chess concepts. Rather, it is that elite chess depends heavily on automatic pattern recognition, and building this intuition requires an enormous amount of exposure.
Learning Speed, Talent, and Environment
In my opinion, one natural advantage of faster learners is their ability to internalize patterns more quickly. If everything else is equal, a faster learner will outperform a slower learner.
However, in reality, everything is rarely equal.
Opportunities are shaped by context and environment. The competitive nature of chess cannot simply be reduced to:
"Learn faster = become stronger."
At a certain point, psychology, motivation, access to resources, and environment become major factors.
My Own Experience as an Adult Improver
I became interested in this topic because I genuinely want to become a stronger chess player. Naturally, I have encountered many discussions about adult improvement both online and in real life.
I want to mention three examples of adult improvers:
- Myself.
- An FM I know personally.
- Mihai Suba.
All three of us started learning chess around the age of 19.
My Chess Development
I was introduced to chess through a friend who started watching the YouTube channel Mato Jelic. We both enjoyed the fascinating positions, the commentary, and the humor. Eventually, we began playing chess simply because we were fascinated by the game, without any serious expectations of improvement.
We would play very long games, sometimes four hours or more, while discussing possible moves and solving problems together during the game.
Over time, I became much more invested in chess, while my friend moved on to other interests.
I have a particular psychological tendency to become obsessed with competitive activities. However, I have never been a particularly systematic learner. My improvement has mostly come through practical experience: playing many games, analyzing situations, and extracting lessons from the activity itself.
Over the years, I played a huge number of online games, particularly bullet games, before eventually joining a local chess club and beginning to play over-the-board chess.
My first classical FIDE rating was 1920 after participating in an open tournament at age 25. My current FIDE rating is above 2000.
In some ways, I unintentionally recreated part of the process through which children improve: I played an enormous number of games and accumulated experience. However, I did not have the full immersion that many young chess players have.
I eventually started studying chess through books, courses, videos, and conversations with stronger players. I also had some coaching. Nevertheless, my primary method remained the same: play a lot and learn from the experience.
I am proud that I crossed the 2000 FIDE barrier with relatively limited assistance, and I do not plan to stop improving until I achieve a title.
An FM Example: The Importance of Chess Environment
I met an FM through over-the-board chess, and we eventually discussed how we started playing chess.
Interestingly, he also began around the age of 19. He told me about Mihai Suba, who also started learning chess at approximately that age.
His own achievements are remarkable. He reached around 2370 FIDE strength and has multiple victories against grandmasters.
When I asked him how he managed to improve so much, he explained that, during his development years, the chess community around him was much stronger than it is today.
Every day he could visit his chess club, play stronger players, analyze games afterward, and learn directly from more experienced players. There were also more tournament opportunities available.
This is a perfect example of immersion.
Talent obviously played a role, but what stands out to me is the environment: he was constantly surrounded by chess, constantly receiving feedback, and constantly exposed to stronger players.
Interestingly, Mihai Suba experienced something similar when he joined a university chess club.
Mihai Suba: The Extreme Example
When I learned about Mihai Suba's career, I was amazed by what he achieved.
Suba started learning chess around the age of 19 (some accounts place it between 18 and 20). Despite this late start, he progressed rapidly, becoming an International Master around age 28 and earning the Grandmaster title at age 31.
Suba was almost certainly exceptionally talented. One indication is his ability to play multiple blindfold games only a few years after beginning chess. Blindfold ability is not the ultimate measure of chess strength, but it does suggest extraordinary visualization skills.
His achievements afterward were even more impressive. He became one of the strongest players in the world, reached the top 20 internationally, and narrowly missed qualifying for the Candidates Tournament.
However, Suba was also deeply immersed in chess. He became a serious theoretician, developed original ideas about chess strategy, and eventually wrote the influential book Dynamic Chess Strategy.
His story demonstrates that starting as an adult does not make elite chess impossible. It does, however, suggest that late improvement requires exceptional talent combined with an environment that allows deep immersion.
Comparing Myself With Younger Players
When I play against younger players in the 2000+ rating range, I often enter the game as the underdog despite being older.
The reason is simple: many of these young players have experienced a level of chess immersion that I have not.
I have around 180 classical FIDE-rated games. Many of my younger opponents have double or triple that number, along with years of coaching, training, and tournament experience.
The games are usually competitive, and I often manage to outplay them. However, when I lose, I do not view it as an attack on my ability or potential.
In this matchup, despite being older chronologically, I am often the junior in terms of chess development, while they are the senior.
Age does not necessarily determine experience.
Conclusion
I do not believe that adult improvement is limited by a lack of neuroplasticity alone.
The adult brain is capable of learning complex skills. The larger challenge is that adults rarely have the opportunity to recreate the environment of a young chess player: years of immersion, thousands of games, constant feedback, and a community built around the activity.
Late starters face a disadvantage, but that disadvantage may be explained less by an inability to learn and more by the difficulty of accumulating the same quantity and quality of experience.
